Increased Homestead Property Tax Exemption

This amendment to the Florida Constitution will give an additional $25,000 homestead exemption for properties assessed higher than $100,000.  This could result in a $75,000 homestead exemption for properties with an assessed value of $100,000 or more. This will NOT affect school district taxes.

This is a ballot initiative that will be voted on by all the citizens of Florida.

As your County Commissioner, I have previously been asked to explain the effects this additional exemption might have on the County's revenue. Let's be clear, it is my job as your County Commissioner to know what a potential loss in tax revenue could mean to the County.

Unfortunately, this has caused some individuals to believe that I am against this additional homestead exemption which is not true.

What do you do when you have less income? You either look for additional income or you have to save money somewhere.

At the present time, the County is growing and we are confident that this growth will lessen or make up the effects of this additional exemption.

As a conservative, I have always supported lower property taxes and believe that property owners should not be the ones shouldering all tax burden.
